Currently, I have focused on certain neural networks in order to explore the similarities and differences between them. I have chosen to analyze neural networks to see how close they are to actually simulating a real brain. As of now, I have a broad understanding of what each neural network does and how it it is similar/different.
I have broken my project down into three different research areas: Spaun, Deep Mind's AI, and Lane Assist Vehicles. Spaun is a biological simulation, Deep Mind focuses on pixel-driven video games, and Lane Assist Vehicles use real camera input. My main issue this week was figuring out which aspects of these neural networks I would be focusing on. When doing research on each of these areas, I seemed to have too much information and I was still unclear as to which areas I wanted to compare with one another. After my meeting with Justin, I have decided to concentrate on what all three areas have in common, visual input.
However, now that that I have a specific feature of each neural network to focus on, I needed to come up with a thesis. It was important that I made sure that my thesis took a stance. I argue that each neural network has different goals which cause the network architecture to be different in certain ways. These 'certain ways' are still being decided on after I deepen my understanding of each neural network. It is also an option to focus on Spaun and either Deep Mind or Lane Assist Vehicles because Deep Mind and Lane Assist are most similar. Another option could be to leave out Spaun because it is different from the other two. However, I can include all three since it will strengthen my stance. There are all different paths I can take once I dive deeper into their differences that focus on achieving their different goals.
So my next steps are to dive deeper into the specific goals of each neural network and determine the significant differences between neural networks that allow it to achieve this goal. Then, I will focus on the areas that are within the same category so that it is more clear to the reader when comparing them.
In terms of the deadline for the project, I will begin outlining my paper and start writing a draft of my literature review once I determine which categories to compare. I will be focused on making progress in the following weeks in order to stay on track with the deadline of the project.
